母は北朝鮮帰国事業で北朝鮮に渡った大阪出身の元在日朝鮮人であり、金正日から日本風に「あゆみ」と呼ばれていた高英姫。金正日の長男の金正男は異母兄、次男の金正哲は同母兄となる。祖父は北朝鮮の初代最高指導者である金日成主席。母方の祖父は日本軍協力者の高ギョンテクである。祖父・日成は結婚を認めなかったことから母子ともに首都の平壌ではなく、元山市で生活していた。済州島に出自を持つ大阪出身の在日朝鮮人の母親を持ち、幼少期から日本人の専属料理人、藤本健二が作った寿司を好んで食べ、当人自身も東京タワーに興味を持つなど日本文化に囲まれた状況で育った。
